Problems and issues

  1. climate disaster On the open estuarine coast at the Bay of Bengal margin, the upazila sits directly in the cyclone and storm-surge landfall corridor. So what: Shoreline settlements and the fishing base are repeatedly at risk. Source: Department of Disaster Management / Bangladesh Water Development Board
  2. environment Its narrow Sundarbans-edge mangrove fringe, a key natural surge buffer, is vulnerable to further erosion and loss. So what: Reduced mangrove cover leaves the coast more exposed to surge. Source: Bangladesh Forest Department
